Leadership skills are the most important skills an athlete can possess, and all coaches at the high school level want their players to be leaders. However, do our high school athletes really know what it means to be a leader? Most student-athletes go their entire career without truly understanding the skills and traits that embody leadership.
If we want our student-athletes to be leaders, then we must empower them to become people, because better people make better leaders. Better People Leadership Workshop is an interactive curriculum consisting of three lessons designed to help student-athletes develop the mental skills and character traits that are the foundation for them to become leaders on the field, in the classroom, with their families, and in their communities.
Simon Sinek's Golden Circle
Student-athletes will develop an understanding of why they play their sport
Using Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle, student-athletes will understand the first key character trait of leadership: understanding your purpose
Students will complete a Golden Circle for famous professional athletes like Tom Brady, Kyrie Irving, and Alex Morgan, and see that teammates do not follow them because of what they accomplish. Instead, teammates choose follow leaders because they are drawn a leader’s purpose.
Students will fill out a Golden Circle for themselves to develop their WHY for playing their sport
Spheres of Control
Student-athletes will identify aspects of their sport that are within their control and create a strategy for how to respond positively to events they cannot control
Student-athletes will observe examples from college and professional athletes and will participate in activities that demonstrate the second key character trait of a leader: focus only on what you have control over
Student-athletes will complete the Spheres of Control activity to determine what events they have control over
Student-athletes will develop a routine that will assist them in responding positively to events that they cannot control
The Leadership Pyramid
Student-athletes will define the role of a leader and will understand the relationship between leadership, trust, and character
Student-athletes will create a Leadership Blueprint to follow during the season
Student-athletes will study the Leadership Pyramid and participate in activities that will demonstrate the third key character trait of a leader: earn the trust of the people you are leading
Student-athletes will fill out a Leadership Blueprint for professional athletes, identifying character skills, behaviors, and outcomes of successful leaders
Student-athletes will create a Leadership Blueprint that identifies the character skills that they embody and outliens behaviors they can follow to become that leader during the season
Student-athletes will receive a Better People Leadership t-shirt, and a Leadership Workbook that they will complete during the workshop and can share with their coach.
